This lecture, based on my book (with same title, Princeton UP, 2007), examines the experience of Jewish survivors, both the tiny remnant of German Jews and the c. 250,000 Jewish displaced persons living in occupied Germany from 1945 to c. 1951 and their complex entanglements with defeated Germans and victorious Allies. The theme is essentially the “post-history” of my current project, the research that provoked my current fascination with the experience of refugee Jews in the Soviet Union, especially in Central Asia.
