Between 1938 and 1944, the Hellenic underworld was hired by Jewish committees through William R. Perl, a young lawyer in Vienna. Perl organised an operation that carried Jews from Nazi-occupied Europe to British Palestine. ‘The Action’ carried 40,000 Jews aboard a variety of barely seaworthy vessels on 62 clandestine voyages. This presentation endeavours to highlight the contribution made by smugglers and other shadowy figures, whose real names will probably never be known.
